Alex Cora was the mastermind behind the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scheme.

That takeaway from Major League Baseball’s investigative report along with allegations of cheating in Boston led to the Red Sox dismissing him as manager yesterday.

Celtics coach Brad Stevens, via A. Sherrod Blakely of NBC Sports Boston:

“I read the report; obviously there was going to be fallout from the report,” Stevens said. “But I know Alex well, gotten to know him, we’re friends. I feel badly for him.”

Stevens added, “Obviously, there’s always consequences. It sounded like based on his statement and the Red Sox statement, they understood that. That doesn’t change how vibrant he is when he walks in a room, how much he raises the energy level of the room, how good he’s been to me.

“I was sad about the whole thing.”

Stevens has a reputation for not cutting corners. But he’s also quite familiar with a team flouting the rules. It’s common in Boston.
