Wizards center Dwight Howard undergoing surgery has gone from possibility to plan.

Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports:

Howard has been in pain pretty much all season. Presumably, this will finally provide him with comfort.

In the meantime, Washington will likely continue to get subpar play from its centers – Thomas Bryant, Markieff Morris, Ian Mahinmi and Jason Smith. Bryant has been the latest starter, as Wizards coach Scott Brooks cycles through underwhelming options.

When healthy, Howard protects the rim and provides spacing through his gravity in the pick-and-roll. Washington badly need both.

Howard has a $5,603,850 player option for next season. Though his play when he returns will influence his decision, this probably pushes him toward opting in – which will crunch the capped-out Wizards even further. Their doom-and-gloom present could make their future even worse.
