Report: Pelicans paying Rajon Rondo $3.3 million

Remember fewer than three years ago when Rajon Rondo called himself a max-contract player and his general manager agreed with the assessment?

Rondo, who just signed with the Pelicans, is now on his fifth team since. After playing out his extension with the Celtics and Mavericks then earning $9.5 million from the Kings and $17 million from the Bulls (including his partial guarantee of $3 million this season), Rondo is on another contract even further from the max.

Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports:

The Pelicans also gave Darius Miller $2.1 million, according to Bobby Marks of ESPN. If both figures are correct, the Pelicans are now hard-capped (because Miller’s and Rondo’s salaries combine to be above the $5,192,000 non-taxpayer mid-level exception).

The hard cap probably isn’t problematic, anyway. The hard cap is $6 million above the luxury-tax line, and I doubt New Orleans would pay the luxury tax.
