Who is the leading scorer in the Las Vegas Summer League?
Lonzo Ball has drawn the spotlight and played well, but he hasn’t shot well and it’s not him. It’s not Boston’s Jayson Tatum, although he can get buckets. Dennis Smith (Mavericks) and Donovan Mitchell (Jazz) have impressed, but they’re not it either.
It’s San Antonio’s Bryn Forbes.
It’s fitting a that a Spurs player is flying under the radar, even at Summer League.
Forbes had a strong Summer League a year ago, which is part of the reason the Spurs signed him to a multi-year. He bounced between the Spurs and Austin in the then D-League last season, and when down he averaged 23.4 points per game and shot 45 percent from three. He struggled more with his shot when up against the far more athletic NBA defenders (one reason not to take Summer League stats too seriously), but this summer is again showing progress with his game (such as the ability to draw fouls). He was impressive in the Utah Summer League and has scored almost at will in Las Vegas, including back-to-back 35-point games. He’s in the running for Summer League MVP.
Forbes is the kind of player who makes Summer League fun, something Shea Serrano put well at the Ringer talking about Forbes. Forbes has been entertaining. With his Summer League over, check out his highlights from Las Vegas above.
Then don’t be shocked sometime next season when Gregg Popovich throws Forbes in a game and he looks like another find for the Spurs.
