The Cavaliers have talked about adding a playmaker or a big man.

Their next signing is neither.

After working out several point guards — a position where LeBron James has repeatedly called for help — Cleveland is adding a forward: Derrick Williams.

Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports:

The Heat just waived Williams, who regressed majorly in Miami after showing progress with the Knicks last season. The No. 2 pick in the 2011 draft, Williams has talent. But if he doesn’t play much better than he did in Miami, he won’t last long in Cleveland.

Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue said he might rest LeBron, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love against the Thunder tonight. So, Williams could get thrown into the fire immediately. It speaks to the Cavs’ lack of available depth across the board that Williams could also get minutes — maybe even reducing LeBron’s workload — in following games. And Cleveland still needs another point guard and big man.

Williams is worth the flier. The Cavaliers just can’t stop here.
