TNT mainstay Craig Sager passed away at the age of 65 on Thursday after a long battle with leukemia. TNT, coaches, and fans around the league have expressed their support for his family, and cherished Sager’s life with touching tributes.
Before his game against the Phoenix Suns, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich spoke only of Sager during pregame media availability, remarking that, “The most amazing part of him is his courage.”
Sager was also the subject of an HBO Real Sports segment back in the spring that hadn’t been fully released to non-subscribers, but after his passing, the media company saw fit to release it to the public as a celebration of his life.
In the video, Sager’s story is told and runs the gamut, from the Dallas Mavericks team doctor telling him to go to the hospital, through getting two bone marrow transplants from his son, Craig Jr. and his cancer returning several times.
It’s a tough video to watch, I think, because it blends rather quickly the gregarious personality of Sager — that something special Popovich mentioned — with scenes of him in cancer treatment, going through something difficult.
Sager will be missed from people around the basketball world, and his fight was always the good fight.
