Another day, another player who straddled the line between a fine and a suspension and came away with only a fine.
This time it’s Wizards guard John Wall, who bumped referee Marc Davis and then, according to Davis, followed that with profanity. That earned Wall his second technical foul and ejection – and led to this fine.
Washington Wizards guard John Wall has been fined $25,000 for inappropriate interaction with a game official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his ejection, it was announced today by Kiki VanDeWeghe, Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.
Wall was ejected for receiving his second technical of the game with 33.3 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of the Wizards’ 114-106 loss to the Houston Rockets on Nov. 7 at Verizon Center.
I don’t think Wall intended to bump Davis, and intent is necessary to trigger a one-game suspension. But I also don’t know whether Wall intended to bump Davis, and replying to Davis afterward with profanity removes some benefit of the doubt.
So, I wouldn’t have been shocked if the NBA suspended Wall. But fortunately for him and Washington, the league opted for just a fine.
