With the Hawks making other moves, signing Dwight Howard and re-signing Kent Bazemore, it likely spells the end of the Al Horford era in Atlanta. Horford is probably the best free agent still on the board outside of Kevin Durant, and plenty of teams have been linked to him, but The Vertical‘s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that two teams have emerged as favorites to sign him: the Celtics (who are also in on the Durant sweepstakes) and the Wizards.
The Boston Celtics and Washington Wizardshave emerged as the frontrunners to sign free-agent big man Al Horford, and a final decision is expected Saturday night, league sources told The Vertical.
Horford could sign a four-year, $113 million maximum contract to leave the Atlanta Hawks.
Getting Horford would certainly strengthen the Celtics’ case for Durant, and even if they don’t land Durant, Horford would instantly become the best player on their team and make them a legitimate contender in the east. For Washington, a core of Horford, John Wall and Bradley Beal is enticing and certainly an upgrade after a disappointing season in which the Wizards missed the playoffs for the first time in three years. But that’s contingent on everyone staying healthy, which has been an issue for all three in the past.
