Report: David West to decline player option on Spurs contract

When you decline a $12.6 million player option to sign a minimum contract, you’re unpredictable.

Can David West command more than the $1,551,659 he was due to make with the Spurs next season? Of course.

Did that mean he’d opt out? There was no telling, but now we know.

Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports:

West, who turns 36 before next season begins, is still a helpful contributor. If he’s willing to take another discount for a winner, contenders will line up. If he wants to recoup some of the money he sacrificed last summer, he’ll still have plenty of suitors with the salary cap skyrocketing.

He could always end up back where he started – in San Antonio on a minimum contract. This just gives him more time to assess his options.
