The early list of Pacers coaching candidates included Mike D’Antoni, Mark Jackson, Brian Shaw, Randy Wittman and Mike Woodson.

Another contender to replace Frank Vogel? Jeff Hornacek.

The Pacers also are believed to be strongly considering former Suns coach Jeff Hornacek, who has emerged on the short list of early candidates for Orlando, according to two people in the coaching industry.

Hornacek did a nice job the previous two years with the Suns then just sort of fell all over himself this season. Feuding with Markieff Morris, not connecting with other players, strange lineups in response to a roster with too many similar players – the problems didn’t originate with Hornacek, but he didn’t overcome them. Hornacek could have done better this season, but falling short in particularly difficult circumstances doesn’t undo all his success the previous two years.

Either the Pacers or Magic would do well to hire Hornacek, who’s also a Rockets candidate. He could help liberate offenses that too often stagnate.

I’m not sure either team needed a restart, but Larry Bird forced one in Indiana and Scott Skiles forced one in Orlando. At this point, Hornacek would provide the breath of fresh air each team seeks.
