Jeff Hornacek isn’t the only known Magic coaching candidate.

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com:

The other early candidates for the Magic include assistant Adrian Griffin; former assistant and interim head coach James Borrego, who was passed over in favor of Skiles and then joined Gregg Popovich as an assistant in San Antonio; former assistant coach Patrick Ewing, who was on Stan Van Gundy’s staff in Orlando; and Vogel.

Don’t be surprised if this list changes significantly. Scott Skiles just resigned. I’m not sure Orlando was prepared to conduct a coaching search.

Hornacek would be a nice hire, as I wrote earlier.

Vogel is the best coach mentioned, and he’d continue Skiles’ defense-first track with upgraded coaching creativity. It might even be ideal to go from the hard-driving Skiles to Vogel, because players would appreciate Vogel’s looseness by comparison. That won’t be the case everywhere for Vogel.

Ewing probably deserves a head-coaching opportunity at some point. I’m not sure this is it, but the Magic should make an effort to view him through a wider lens than their former big-man coach. He has more responsibilities in Charlotte.

I’m not sold on Borrego, but he served as the Magic’s interim coach after they fired Jacque Vaughn. If the team that saw him in this role up close wants him, that says something.
