The plot thickens in Memphis, hours after the Grizzlies unexpectedly fired head coach Dave Joerger. Initial reports indicate that management was annoyed with Joerger’s public pursuit of other coaching jobs, but ESPN.com’s Marc Stein reports that Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace also interviewed recently for a front-office positions in Sacramento, where Joerger has been linked since his dismissal in Memphis:
USA Today‘s Sam Amick confirmed that Wallace interviewed in Sacramento, although it wasn’t close to happening:
Given the simmering, under-the-radar tension in the Memphis ownership group — which included the 2014 ouster of Jason Levien and the recent tangled saga of minority owner Steve Kaplan’s dispute over his shares of the team as he negotiates with Glen Taylor to buy a piece of the Timberwolves — it’s not a surprise that at least one Grizzlies executive was looking around for other options. But by all accounts, their problem with Joerger was his public criticism of the roster the front office assembled and his equally public flirtation with the Timberwolves two summers ago.
By no means is this over.
