Report: Kevin Martin agrees to sign with Spurs

Just before Tuesday’s deadline for playoff eligibility, veteran shooter Kevin Martin agreed to a buyout with the Timberwolves, giving him the opportunity to join a playoff team. Last week, with the buyout heavily rumored, the likeliest landing spot was San Antonio, and that’s exactly where he’s going to end up, according to’s Marc Stein:

The Spurs have already been active on the buyout market, signing veteran point guard Andre Miller (who was a teammate of Martin’s in Minnesota) and waiving little-used guard Ray McCallum to make room. With 15 players under contract, San Antonio will have to waive another player to bring Martin on board, with Rasual Butler and Matt Bonner being the likeliest candidates.

Martin doesn’t exactly fill a need for the Spurs, who already have plenty of shooting and are the second-best team in the NBA. But having him on the end of the bench couldn’t hurt, and it gives him the chance to compete for a title after spending most of his career on bad teams.
