The Timberwolves overloaded on veteran mentors this season: Kevin Garnett, Tayshaun Prince and Andre Miller.
Minnesota’s young players will have to learn from just two of them the rest of the season.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:
Miller is on a one-season minimum contract, so a buyout should be pretty straightforward. Most likely, he’ll forgo the rest of his guaranteed salary and recoup the same amount from his new team, minus how many days he remains a free agent (though Minnesota could make him whole for that period).
There are probably multiple playoff teams that would like Miller as a steady third guard. But as a backup in the rotation? Not many have a need. Perhaps, the Heat — who’ve lost Tyler Johnson and Beno Udrih to likely season-ending injuries — would be a fit. However, due to luxury-tax concerns, Miami is limited in how many days it will employ additional players.
However, there’s a potential hitch in this plan. The Timberwolves must waive Miller in conjunction with a buyout, and any team with a roster vacancy can claim him because he’s on a minimum contract. He might not actually reach free agency.
If Miller is waived by Tuesday, he’ll be eligible for another team’s playoff roster. He just has to hope he’s not claimed by a team that he doesn’t want to join.
