Update 2: Nevermind. K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune:
Still a fine trade for Utah, just not as good.
Update: Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
Justin Holiday is a nice player to have on your team. I like this deal even better for the Jazz now.
The Jazz looked at bigger names at point guard:
So, Utah will settle for the safe Shelvin Mack.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:
The Jazz have more first-rounders than they know what to do with – all their own plus the Warriors’ in 2016, better of the Celtics’ and Raptors’ in 2016, Knicks’ in 2017, Pistons’ in 2017, Warriors’ in 2017 and Nuggets’ in 2018. Surrendering one of those for help this season makes sense.
Mack was superfluous with the Hawks, who have Jeff Teague and Dennis Schröder. But he’s a steady point guard who can help the Jazz.
With Dante Exum injured, Utah has relied on Trey Burke and Raul Neto at point guard. Mack isn’t a huge upgrade, but his strength should help in some matchups. Mack is in the final guaranteed year of his contract, so the Jazz can move on once Exum gets healthy.
In the meantime, the Utah is slightly more threatening in its bid to make the playoffs.
