But that doesn’t mean Van Gundy is satisfied with Ilyasova as the team’s starting power forward.
They want a four in free agency this summer, the Pistons, really badly. They’re going to look at Stan’s old friend Ryan Anderson. I’ve heard they’re hot on Motiejunas from Houston who’s always hurt. So, who knows how hot they actually are?
The Pistons project to have $20 million-$25 million in cap space. Power forward appears most ripe for an upgrade with that money.
Donatas Motiejunas also made sense on paper – before lingering back injuries significantly dropped his stock. Barring a quick return to the lineup and sustained production, teams will be wary of him this summer. He’s certainly no longer on track to becoming a splashy free agent signing.
Ilyasova is a nice fallback starter. But if the Pistons can upgrade and move him to the bench – where he’d likely displace pending free agent Anthony Tolliver – that’s better for them.
