Warriors delay opening of new San Francisco arena until 2019-20 season

Since 2012, the Warriors have been planning a move from Oakland’s Oracle Arena, which has been their home for 50 years, to a new building in San Francisco. The project has been held up by various complications including litigation from groups opposed to the building, and now a previously planned 2018 opening has been pushed back a year.

Warriors president Rick Welts told the San Jose Mercury News‘ Tim Kawakami in a radio interview that the new arena’s opening will now be delayed until the 2019-20 season. You can listen to the audio here.

The arena, which is entirely privately funded and receiving no taxpayer subsidies, has been met with opposition from a group called the Mission Bay Alliance due to concerns about increased traffic and parking complications, among other things. Still, it seems like once this hurdle is cleared, everything else is a go, and at some point the Warriors will be playing in San Francisco.
