Stephen Curry, hands on his hips and sweat dripping down his forehead, looked stunned as he flipped his eyes toward the scoreboard in the final seconds.
Believe it:
Bucks 108, Warriors 95.
Golden State – after a 24-0 start and 28 straight wins dating back to last season – suffered its first lost of the season in Milwaukee tonight.
The Warriors, who posted the second longest win streak in NBA history, fell nine games short of the 1971-72 Lakers’ 33-game record. The Lakers also saw their streak snapped by the Bucks, and Milwaukee fans – many of whom wore “24-1” shirts – buzzed as their team again denied history.
Golden State overcame a 12-point deficit in the first half and cut a subsequent 14-point deficit to only one. But the Warriors ultimately just couldn’t stop Greg Monroe, who scored 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds.
The loss eliminates Golden State from more minor accomplishments, like the first 7-0 road trip in NBA history. But topping the 72-10 1995-96 Bulls for the best-ever record remains very much in play.
Now, the Warriors, who’ve expended a lot of energy to win all these games, can proceed with a little less pressure. Not every game will feel like a must-win.
The Bucks played with that type of urgency tonight, though – and that’s why Golden State finally succumbed.
