The Grizzlies signed Ryan Hollins, filling their apparent need for a third center behind Marc Gasol and Brandan Wright.
But that position has reopened.
The Memphis Grizzlies waived center Ryan Hollins, the team announced today.
Memphis had to drop someone to reach the regular-season roster limit of 15. The choice probably came down to Hollins and JaMychal Green, whose $150,000 guarantee gave him an edge.
Hollins’ deal was unguaranteed, but the Grizzlies kept him two days after the waiver deadline to begin the regular season, which means he’ll collect $ 16,034 that counts toward the cap. Why didn’t thy drop him sooner? My best guess: They were trying to trade someone else to keep him.
So, keep an eye on Hollins returning to Memphis is a roster spot opens, especially if Gasol or Wright gets hurt. Two centers – even if Zach Randolph can also play the position – make for a thin depth chart.
