One of the most intriguing storylines of the Lakers’ training camp was the development of center Robert Upshaw, who was at one time considered a lottery-level prospect but went undrafted after a series of drug-related issues during his college career. He signed with the Lakers’ Summer League team and stuck around in training camp, competing for the 15th roster spot, but they waived him this week. Now, the Cleveland Plain Dealer‘s Chris Haynes reports that he’s cleared waivers and will join the D-League’s Los Angeles D-Fenders.
This was always the most likely outcome for Upshaw, who is a talented player but is in no way ready to be an NBA player right now, physically or mentally. He’s going to need a lot of work in the D-League before he reaches that point, if he ever does.
