Report: Cavaliers signing Nick Minnerath

The clock is ticking for Tristan Thompson, who has until Oct. 1 to accept his qualifying offer. If he lets the deadline pass, he’ll remain a restricted free agent – but without his greatest leverage, the qualifying offer. So, he ought to make a decision by then.

In the meantime, the Cavaliers are ramping up the competition for their 15th and final regular-season roster spot with Nick Minnerath.

Chris Haynes of Cleveland.com:

Minnerath will join Quinn Cook, Jared Cunningham and D.J. Stephens as Cavaliers without a fully guaranteed salary. Presumably, Cleveland will keep only one to fill its roster.

Minnerath went undrafted out of Detroit in 2013 and has played overseas since. He’s a stretch four with the athleticism and toughness to compete inside. If you’re looking for someone who might have slipped through the cracks, it’s him. Minnerath played only one season of high school basketball due to grades and injury, abused drugs for a couple years after high school, went to Jackson Community College and then tore his ACL and MCL his senior year at Detroit.

If the Cavaliers waive him, they can assign his D-League rights to their affiliate, the Canton Charge. That might be their plan. But Minnerath will at least have a chance to outplay Cook, Cunningham and Stephens and earn an NBA job.
