Report: Pacers signing former Syracuse forward C.J. Fair

The Pacers signed Toney Douglas and guaranteed $600,000 of his minimum salary, even though they already have 15 players – the regular-season roster limit – who already had fully guaranteed salaries.

So, what’s one more player?

Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports:

I don’t see Douglas making the team. I really don’t see how Fair does.

Fair went undrafted out of Syracuse last year, because his ball skills aren’t quite up to par. The small forward has NBA size and athleticism, though. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him play in the league. Indiana’s roster is just too crowded.

The Pacers’ new D-League affiliate, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, already hold Fair’s D-League rights. Indiana brought him to training camp last year, waived him and then assigned his D-League rights to the Mad Ants. Indiana is probably inviting him back to training camp, maybe even throwing in a small guarantee, to entice him to spend next season with the Mad Ants rather than overseas.

For him, there’s the potential guarantee and the chance to work out in front of the Pacers’ brass. If they ever clear a roster spot, he could fill it. Indiana clearly likes him.
