Making official what was reported over a month ago, the Pacers are expected to announce on Wednesday that they have purchased the D-League’s last remaining unaffiliated franchise, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. 21Alive News reports that a press conference is set for 1:30pm Eastern time.
The Fort Wayne Mad Ants will call a 1:30 p.m. press conference Wednesday to announce the sale of the team to the Indiana Pacers, sources tell 21Alive.
21Alive has learned of an afternoon press conference at the Grand Wayne Center at which time the sale will officially be announced.
The Mad Ants will become the Pacers’ single affiliate in the D-League, leaving 12 teams without an affiliation. The Hawks, Nets, Hornets, Bulls, Nuggets, Clippers, Bucks, Timberwolves, Pelicans, Blazers and Wizards all shared the Mad Ants, in addition to the Pacers. The team’s sale to the Pacers is just another step in the road that will inevitably lead to all 30 teams each having their own D-League affiliate. The sooner that day gets here, the sooner the D-League can reach its potential as a true minor league for the NBA, possibly even establishing itself as the second-best pro league in the world.
