Report: Cavaliers signing Jerrelle Benimon

As long as J.R. Smith doesn’t do something horrific today, his 2015-16 salary will become guaranteed tomorrow.

Tristan Thompson will also surely be back with the Cavaliers, whether he signs a long-term deal or accepts the qualifying offer.

That’ll give Cleveland 14 players with guaranteed salaries.

Who will nab the 15th and final spot on the regular-season roster? The Cavaliers have Quinn Cook, Jared Cunningham and now Jerrelle Benimon.

Chris Reichert of Upside & Motor:

Benimon has a real chance to stick. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 19.8 points and 11.0 rebounds per game in the D-League last season. Skilled and just 24, this is his time to make the NBA.

If Kyrie Irving will be out a while, that could give Cook an edge. But if the Cavaliers are comfortable with Mo Williams and Matthew Dellavedova at point guard, Benimon might be the favorite of these three to make the regular-season roster. Benimon is not eligible to be waived and assigned to the Cavs’ D-League affiliate, which indicates they actually like him for an NBA job.
