Drama and controversy have swirled around Derrick Rose in recent years, and that continues even as he starts to gear up for what he hopes is a return-to-form season for the Bulls.
Rose is being sued by someone saying she was a former girlfriend and she alleges some troubling, criminal activities by Rose including rape. TMZ has the story, and I warn you that the report is very graphic, so if you’re easily offended you may want to stop here (and don’t click the link).
The woman, identified only as Jane Doe, says she and Rose dated from 2011 to 2013. During that time, Rose allegedly tried to pressure her to masturbate in front of him, allow him to have sex with her friends and engage in group sex with strangers, all of which she says she refused….
Rose and his friends broke into her apartment and gang raped her while she was incapacitated. She says she remembers only “flashes” of the incident, but can remember the defendants forcibly raping her. She claims she waited for two years to file the suit because she was “ashamed and embarrassed” of what happened and concerned her “conservative family” would find out.
There is no criminal report filed in this case.
A spokesman for Rose responded, calling the lawsuit baseless and a “shakedown.”
It would be a mistake to speculate on what is alleged here (take it from a former crime reporter, the first filings of a civil suit are but the first steps of a long, winding journey). If Rose did what is listed in the suit, more than financial restitution to the woman is in order — these are crimes and the criminal justice system should step in. But there remain many questions, ones none of us are in a position to answer.
But this doesn’t make Fred Hoiberg’s job any easier, nor is this the kind of issue the Bulls will want hanging over them as they head into training camp.
