Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker plans to sign Bucks arena bill next week

Earlier this month, both branches of the Wisconsin state legislature passed a bill to use $250 million in public funding to build a new arena for the Bucks in downtown Milwaukee. The next step will come when Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican presidential candidate, signs the bill into law. And now, we have a date: next Wednesday, August 12.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker plans to sign a bill providing $250 million in taxpayer money to pay for a new Milwaukee Bucks stadium next week.

Walker’s office sent an invitation to lawmakers and others saying he plans to sign the bill Aug. 12 at State Fair Park outside Milwaukee.

The Legislature passed the arena bill on bipartisan votes in both the Senate and Assembly after team leaders threatened to leave Wisconsin if the deal did not get done.

This isn’t the end of the saga — the Bucks still have to secure the land for the arena and negotiate a lease with the city before they can break ground. But all of that seems like a formality at this point. The Bucks are staying in Milwaukee for the foreseeable future.
