Amar’e Stoudemire was probably signing with the Mavericks.
But with Jermaine O’Neal opting to remain retired, Dallas faced more pressure to make sure Stoudemire didn’t slip away.
The Mavericks are getting their man.
Shams Charania of RealGM:
Stoudemire will clear waivers Wednesday, and then he’ll be an unrestricted free agent. It’s just a matter of timing when he joins the Mavericks.
Dallas plays the Thunder on Thursday and Rockets on Friday, and Bernard James’ 10-day contract runs through Friday. If Stoudemire is ready, the Mavericks will just waive James and sign Stoudemire. If Stoudemire isn’t ready, they’ll let James play out his contract and then not re-sign him. Either way, Stoudemire will get a minimum-salary contract.
Dallas has needed a backup big behind Tyson Chandler since trading Brandan Wright in the Rajon Rondo deal. With Dirk Nowitzki spacing the floor and Rajon Rondo setting him up, Stoudemire has a great opportunity to provide interior scoring. He’s far from an ideal defender, but Rick Carlisle will do his best to scheme around that.
