Rockets GM Daryl Morey is one of the few in the league who are active on Twitter at times, but that may change after a recent minor misstep.
Morey opened it up for a question in answer session, and when asked whether or not he ever tires of watching basketball as part of his job, here was his response:
“No, it is like being a gynecologist, you don’t get sick of it”
A day later, Morey issued somewhat of a retraction.
During an interview about the NBA Development League showcase he is attending, Morey addressed the backlash to his tweet during a question-and-answer session he did on Twitter while on his way to the event in Santa Cruz, Calif.
“I had a tweet that was in bad taste,” Morey said. “I’m going to leave the comedy to the professionals. I think I’m going to stick with my GM job.” …
Morey did not comment when asked if he had been admonished in any way by the NBA for his joke.
I retweeted this (from another user) and called Morey a “clown” at the time, and was asked if I did so because I was offended by what he said, or because I thought the comment was hurtful.
It was actually neither.
I believed it was an unprofessional remark for someone at his level to make while acting as a representative of the organization, and also felt it was a comment that needlessly reinforced a negative stereotype of the existence of an overly-macho culture in men’s pro sports.
The only people who should actually be offended here are comedians, because nothing about this (besides the relative shock value) is really all that funny. Thankfully, while he didn’t exactly offer an apology, Morey seems to realize it.
