Report: Celtics buy out Nate Robinson

The Celtics traded for Nate Robinson, but they didn’t really want him.

They just wanted to unload Jameer Nelson, who had a player option for next season, for Robinson’s expiring contract. Boston has no use for those aging players during its rebuilding.

That’s why Robinson won’t suit up for the Celtics for a second stint with the franchise.

Sam Amick of USA Today:

Announcement: ProBasketballTalk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $300,000 Fantasy Basketball league for Wednesday’s NBA games. It’s $25 to join and first prize is $30,000. Starts at 7pm ET on Wednesday. Here’s the FanDuel link.

The Clippers, where he’d reunite with Doc Rivers, have been a rumored destination for Robinson. They have a full roster of 15 players, but Dahntay Jones is on just a 10-day contract, and Robinson will need a couple days to clear waivers anyway.

Robinson struggled this season with the Nuggets, but Jordan Farmar hasn’t exactly thrived in Los Angeles, either. At minimum, Robinson provides a different, higher-energy option.

If the Clippers add Robinson, that could complicate their pursuit of Austin Rivers, a process which is already fairly complicated.
