The Bucks are signing Kenyon Martin to a 10-day contract, but they already have a full roster of 15 players – a predicament outlined in greater depth here.
It seemed possible they could get a hardship waiver to add a 16th player, but either they didn’t apply, or Larry Sanders or Ersan Ilyasova prevented them from qualifying.
So, Nate Wolters is on his way out of town.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:
Wolters is on a minimum contract, so any team with an open roster spot (and, if applicable, room beneath the hard cap) can claim him. His salary is fully guaranteed the rest of this season and fully unguaranteed for next season.
He’s also 23 – 14 years younger than Martin.
Though Wolters isn’t in Jason Kidd’s rotation, the point guard was good enough to make my All-Rookie second team last year. The Bucks have preached a long-term vision around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jabari Parker, but this doesn’t follow it. And I don’t believe Martin, who’s far from a lock to help at all on the court, justifies deviating from the plan.
Wolters is a solid passer who takes care of the ball but doesn’t do much else, including shoot. But he doesn’t try to do too much, either. He’s young and productive enough that I bet someone claims him off waivers, which prioritize teams from worst to best record. Someone should take a chance on him for the rest of this season, and if he doesn’t work out, he can be waived with no penalty in the offseason (or used as a handy trade chip).
