Nick Young’s plan to ease Kobe’s burden: Give Young the ball because he’s best three point shooter in league

If Nick Young didn’t exist we’d have to invent him. Just for the entertainment purposes.

All the talk in Lakers’ land these days is about how tired Kobe Bryant is — something he has freely admitted after the last couple games — as he is playing more than 35 minutes a night with the highest usage rate in the league. Nobody is carrying his burden, let alone at age 36.

Nick Young wants to ease that burden — by taking more shots himself.

Here’s what Young told Sam Amick of the USA Today.

“Hats off to (Bryant), still going out there every night and trying to do his best,” Young began before offering his solution. “Just give me the ball, and that’s what could happen. I’m always down to take over the load. Let me, let Wayne (Ellington) take a couple shots. But majority, just give me the ball.”

How very Keyshawn of Young.

But he wasn’t done. Young wants to crank up the threes in his game when he gets the ball (and he wants a spot in the All-Star Saturday Three Point contest). This from Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News.

After shooting 4 of 9 from the perimeter against the Kings (Sunday), Young basically roared by boasting “I’m the best 3-point shooter in the league.”

Uh, no.

I mean he is good — he’s taking 46 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc and hitting 42.3 percent of them. That should be enough to get him an invite to the three point contest in New York in February.

But the list of guys I’d pick before him to shoot a three include Kyle Korver (53.4 percent this year), Courtney Lee (54.5 percent), Bradley Beal (45.5 percent), and Klay Thompson (44 percent), just to name a few.

Still, Young with the ball more and shooting more threes is good for all of us.
