Anonymous general manager: Kings’ coaching job is Chris Mullin’s if he wants it

With Michael Malone surprisingly (and foolishly) fired, the Kings are looking into replacements.

Tyrone Corbin will serve as interim coach, but after that, it could be pretty open. George Karl, who worked with Sacramento general manager Pete D’Alessandro in Denver is a popular choice. Vinny Del Negro has been mentioned.

But perhaps the Kings’ next coach is already working for the organization.

How about Chris Mullin, who hold the title of “Advisor to the Owner”?

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

I wonder whether this is the job Mullin is in line for. He has no coaching experience, and he was previously the Warriors’ general manager. All his post-playing experience is in the front office.

Might he make a play for D’Alessandro’s job?

All signs put this fiasco at the feet of Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé, and Mullin’s title certainly makes it sound as if he has Ranadivé’s ear.

Steve Kerr made a successful transition from the front office to coaching. Perhaps, Mullin could do the same. Or he could stick with what he knows and take over basketball operations, maybe even succeeding in that role.

This might all work out in the end, but Sacramento’s shakeup sure smells fishy.
