John Wall and Miyah Nelson were friends.
She was a 6-year-old girl battling Burkitt’s lymphoma, someone who wanted to meet Nicki Minaj and Wall helped her make a video trying to make that happen (and the singer did reach out to the young girl). Wall and Miyah became friends. Dan Steinberg at the Washington Post wrote this back in March of last year.
“I had an opportunity with my celebrity status, knowing people that know people, to help this girl’s dream come true,” he said in a telephone interview from Milwaukee. “I knew [Minaj] had a caring heart, and when she had an opportunity to see it or read about it, I knew she’d reach out as soon as she could. I just thank my fans, everybody who retweeted it and reposted it, to give me the opportunity to make this girl’s wish come true. And we’ll try to make it happen.”
While Wall is notoriously shy and reserved, Miyah is the opposite. She sprinted toward the guard for a hug when they first met on Thursday. Then they clowned around on the basketball court, talked about Minaj’s music and fashion, and put everyone else at ease.
Miyah lost her battle with cancer. Our thoughts go out to her family and all that knew her. Including Wall.
Wall had 26 points — including the Wizards’ last 10 — plus 17 assists to lead Washington to a 133-132 double overtime win against Boston.
