Robert Covington won D-League Rookie of the Year last season, making him the perfect for the 76ers.
Philadelphia is looking for players who might eventually become NBA caliber but aren’t yet good enough to win games and reduce lottery odds. That’s Covington, a 23-year-old, 6-foot-9 forward.
Marc Stein of ESPN:
Like they did when they added Drew Gordon, the 76ers will have to waive someone to stay at the 15-player roster maximum. On this team, nearly anyone could go.
The Grand Rapids Drive, the Pistons’ D-League affiliate, just used the No. 1 pick in the D-League draft on Covington. That gives the Drive Covington’s D-League rights, not the Pistons his NBA rights.
Philadelphia, as long as Covington is on NBA contract, could assign him to its D-League affiliate, the Delaware 87ers. If the 76ers waive Covington and he returns to the D-League, he’d go back to Grand Rapids.
