Midway through the fourth quarter of the Knicks’ loss to the Wizards on Tuesday, Glen Rice was aggressively defending J.R. Smith on the perimeter, as had been the team’s plan all game long.
Rice made contact with Smith as he received the ball, then bodied him up way out near the half court line. Whether out of frustration or just merely to gain separation, Smith whacked Rice in the groin as he made his move off the dribble, causing Rice to crumble and the referees to (somewhat incredibly) whistle the defender for the blocking foul, when he was the one who was victimized.
Announcement: Pro Basketball Talk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $250,000 Fantasy Basketball league for Wednesday’s NBA games. It’s $25 to join and first prize is $20,000. Starts at 7pm ET on Wednesday. Here’s the FanDuel link.
The Wizards plan to contact the league office to have them take a second look, just in case they see something that would indicate Smith’s action on the play was intentional.
