UPDATE 12:18 p.m. ET:
OKC says Russell Westbrook had surgery today to address a right hand fracture in Cleveland. No timetable. He will be re-evaluated in 4 weeks
Evidently the decision was made fairly quickly, but again, if this was the option that was chosen, it is likely the one that is best for Westbrook after all the others were carefully considered.
11:00 a.m. ET: During the second quarter of the Thunder’s loss to the Clippers on Thursday, Russell Westbrook suffered a small fracture in the second metacarpal of his right hand, an injury which is expected to keep him sidelined for a minimum of 4-6 weeks.
But the timetable is not firm, and could change if the team and its player decide that surgery would be the best option for his long-term prospects.
Announcement: Pro Basketball Talk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $150,000 Fantasy Basketball league for Saturday’s NBA games. It’s $25 to join and first prize is $20,000. Starts at 7pm ET on Saturday. Here’s the FanDuel link.
From Royce Young of ESPN.com:
According to general manager Sam Presti, Russell Westbrook underwent further evaluation by outside consultants on his fractured right hand Friday and the process will continue Saturday. Westbrook remains without an official timetable as the team weighs the possibility of a procedure to repair his hand.
“At this stage, surgery is a consideration for this particular injury,” Presti told ESPN.com. “If there were to be a procedure, we would provide a time frame at that point.”
The Thunder are already without Kevin Durant until at least December due to a foot fracture, and have role players like Reggie Jackson, Anthony Morrow and Jeremy Lamb all similarly sidelined with short-term ailments.
It’ll be interesting to see how OKC deals with these issues for the next couple of months. The Thunder are off to an 0-2 start. and falling too far behind in the loaded Western Conference may severely impact the team’s ability to be among the league’s title contenders, which was expected of them before injuries began to derail those thoughts.
