The NBA is full of talent, personality and suspense. During the offseason, It’s easy to forget how wonderful the league can be. So, I’ve assembled 67 Reasons I’m Excited For Next Season (67RIEFNS). They’ll be presented in no particular order.
Ricky Rubio is not a max-contract player. Not even close.
But I’m entertained by the Timberwolves point guard wanting a max extension.
Of course, why shouldn’t he? David Kahn refused to make Kevin Love the team’s designated player, just so the former Minnesota general manager could save the five-year max extension for Rubio.
Never mind that backfired, with Love forcing his way to the Cavaliers (though netting the Timberwolves a quality return), Rubio still trying to crack the top half of starting point guards, and Kahn losing his job. Kahn’s early diagnosis set Rubio’s value, and made it somewhat reasonable for Rubio to seek a max extension when players of his caliber should know that’s unreasonable.
The Timberwolves understand just how absurd a max extension would be, which is why Rubio is likely headed for restricted free agency. He was disappointed when Kahn was dismissed, and he’ll likely be disappointed not to receive the extension Kahn appeared to be saving for him.
But this should motivate Rubio. Maybe with a strong season and the right team ready to present an offer sheet…
