DeMarcus Cousins sets personal goal of collecting only 5 technical fouls this season

DeMarcus Cousins has the skills to be one of the best big men in the league. But to this point in his career, his poor attitude has been holding him back.

Cousins plays the game with a chip on his shoulder, but far too often that has resulted in him being emotionally out of control, both with players on the opposing team as well as the officials. He was tied for the league lead in technical fouls last season with 16, which resulted in the mandatory one-game suspension.

The Kings aren’t good, and haven’t been for some time. The behavior of Cousins has been an unnecessary additional distraction in recent years, but he is evidently willing to try and do something to change that.

From Jason Jones of The Sacramento Bee:

Cousins received rave reviews from both Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski for the way he handled himself with Team USA this summer, and the fact he’s at least willing to acknowledge that this is something he needs to work on should be viewed as a step in the right direction.

It’s worth wondering, though, just how this will play out in the heat of competition during live game action.

Technical fouls on their own aren’t necessarily indicative of players who are bad apples; Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin were the ones tied with Cousins for the most in the league last season. But there’s a difference between picking up technicals while lobbying referees to call legitimate fouls and punching opposing players in a game’s early moments, and then verbally abusing officials later that very same night.
