Luol Deng found himself in the middle of the situation involving Hawks GM Danny Ferry, but it certainly wasn’t by choice.
Ferry made racially insensitive remarks regarding Deng on a conference call with ownership that has now resulted in his taking an indefinite leave from the team.
But despite it all, Deng doesn’t believe that Ferry is a racist. Speaking with former teammate Kyle Korver, Deng said simply that while he was shocked at the comments, he understands that sometimes things “just slip out.”
Q. You were teammates with Luol Deng. Would you care to comment about what was said about him? Have you reached out to him?
A. Yeah we did speak. Luol is such a good guy. And he’s been through so much in life that I don’t really think this has really even phased him. He told me that he didn’t think that Danny or anyone with the Hawks was racist. He said he was shocked when he heard what was said, but that sometimes things just slip out. It was pretty amazing, really. He just wants everything to move on. He wants to get back to basketball.
The remarks made by Ferry obviously weren’t great initially, and sounded even worse when hearing the audio first hand. But Deng is choosing to rise above it all, which probably isn’t as easy as he’s making it seem.
