Report: Arn Tellem interested in leading NBPA, but players didn’t consider him

Michele Roberts has an excellent reputation as a litigator, and she’s experienced in labor law.

But if there’s a question about the National Basketball Players Association’s new executive director, it’s her lack of experience with the NBA.

That’s not an issue for agent Arn Tellem. His clients, according to RealGM, include:

  • Russell Westbrook
  • Derrick Rose
  • DeAndre Jordan
  • Al Horford
  • Pau Gasol
  • Marc Gasol
  • LaMarcus Aldridge

Yet, he was willing to give up representing them as an agent to represent their union.

Nate Jones:

Jones works for Goodwin Sports Management, a rival agency. So, he’s in position to hear rumblings about this sort of thing. But he’s also closer to the situation than might be ideal for spreading information.

Still, Tellem would have made a very interesting executive director. If he committed to the role, I have little doubt he would have helped the players.

However, if he just temporarily took the position, crafted policy to help agents and then returned to his agency, the players would have suffered. I can see why they’d be leery.

Now that they’re going with Roberts, they’ll need to surround her with people more up-to-date on the specifics of NBA business. It’s not an issue the union would have had with Tellem, though Roberts’ outsider status might be a positive in the long run.
