Ray Allen has emerged as a target in the turf war between LeBron James’ old team and new team.
Both the Heat and Cavaliers want Allen. There are certainly other contenders that would like to add the shooting guard, too.
But after 18 seasons, Allen is not running anywhere.
Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports:
Miami Heat free-agent guard Ray Allen isn’t pressed to make a decision regarding free agency because he is considering retirement, a source told Yahoo Sports.
If Allen delays, he likely loses out on his chance to make the bi-annual exception ($2,077,000) room exception ($2,732,000) as those exceptions get used around the league. Instead, he might have to settle for the minimum salary ($1,448,490).
Soon to turn 39, Allen likely has bigger concerns. A team’s chances of winning a championship and the overall feel of the environment likely play more prominently in his decision.
As long as Allen is amenable to a minimum contract, he can wait as long he wants. There will always be teams lining up to offer him that.
