Report: Gilbert Arenas may receive training camp invite from Clippers

Gilbert Arenas last played in the NBA for the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2011-12 season. But he may be getting a chance to return to the league next year, and do so as a member of a team expected to be in the mix to battle deep into the postseason.

From Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld:

I’m hearing that Gilbert Arenas has looked good in workouts this summer. The Clippers may invite him to training camp, according to sources.

The Clippers have 13 players with guaranteed contracts in place for next season, so theoretically they could add up to two more pieces if they agreed to sign for minimum deals, and were willing to take whatever role might be available on a deep and talented roster.

What the Clippers need, however, is frontcourt depth, or guys capable of adding a defensive footprint to a Doc Rivres-coached squad.

Arenas has always been known as a scorer above all else, but it’s worth noting that veterans are valued at the end of any contender’s bench. If the Clips can’t come up with bona fide contributors to help their postseason chances, then they might as well look at adding some experience and firepower to fill those final roster spots — and Arenas, especially in a smaller role, would fit the bill in both of those categories.
