Sixers waive Justin Holiday

Justin Holiday was waived by the Sixers on Wednesday, reports Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The move was made in order for the team to avoid being on the hook for a portion of his salary next season.

Had Holiday remained on the roster through August 15, his contract would have become partially guaranteed for $50,000, according to Basketball-Reference.com.

Holiday signed a veteran deal in Philadelphia on April 1, and appeared in nine games for the team to close out the 2013 season. He averaged 4.7 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 15.8 minutes per game, but shot a low percentage from the field and averaged a turnover per contest, as well.

Jrue Holiday (Justin’s brother) was traded on draft night¬†from the Sixers to New Orleans for the rights to Nerlens Noel. His departure from the team was likely an additional factor in the decision to cut Justin loose.
