Cavaliers sign Carrick Felix to deal, he will make roster

Carrick Felix was a bit of a surprise draft pick when the Cavaliers plucked him out of Arizona State early in the second round.

But they like the swingman, enough that he has a contract that will keep him on the roster this year, reports Bob Finnan of the News Herald (on Sulia).

The Cavs signed the second-round pick from Arizona State to a reported four-year contract, a league source confirmed on Monday…. The No. 33 overall pick in the 2013 draft will earn $510,000 in 2013-14, about $20,000 more than the league minimum.

There are guarantees on future years of the deal, although if they are fully guaranteed remains to be detailed.

What Felix brings is defense — he did that pretty well at Summer League in Las Vegas (not exactly a bastion of great defense). He averaged 7.2 points a game on 40 percent shooting, plus the 6’6” swingman had 5.4 rebounds a game.

It all was enough to impress new coach Mike Brown and get Felix a shot. We’ll see if he can carve out a roster spot long term.
