The Thunder will be bringing back Derek Fisher for a third straight season, after signing him to a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum salary on Wednesday.
“Derek has proven to be a valuable member of our team and we are excited to have him back,” Thunder GM Sam Presti said, via the official release. “He has such a positive impact on his teammates and the organization.”
This will be the first full year that Fisher has appeared on the Thunder’s roster. Last season, he signed with the team in late February after a weird parting of the ways with the Mavericks, and was brought on the season before after being traded by the Lakers to Houston in the deal that sent Jordan Hill to Los Angeles.
Fisher played in 24 regular season games for the Thunder last season, and averaged 4.1 points in 14.4 minutes per game, while shooting 35.1 percent from three-point distance. His minutes increased as a matter of necessity in the postseason once Russell Westbrook went down with a knee injury, and he finished the playoffs with a 27.1 minutes per game average.
The Thunder always say that Fisher is there for his veteran leadership more than anything else, but Scott Brooks has continued to play him in the rotation instead of developing younger, more talented players on the roster like Reggie Jackson.
With Jackson’s emergence in the playoffs, that should change next season.
This signing will undoubtedly be a disappointment to Thunder fans, as Oklahoma City was said to be one of the two teams at the top of Mike Miller’s free agent list after he was amnestied by the Heat this summer.
On the same day Miller committed to the Grizzlies, the Thunder went out and inked Fisher.
