Will Bynum, one-time Knicks and Lakers target, re-signing with Pistons

Will Bynum – a backup point guard the Knicks and Lakers reportedly wanted – has agreed to re-sign with the Pistons, his agent told reporters. David Aldridge of NBA.com:

Bynum had his finest season last year. His peaks (high-volume scoring with smooth passing) were as high as ever, but his valleys (missed shots galore and turnover after turnover) occurred less often and weren’t quite as deep.

It’s a shame he’s really catching onto the finer points of playing point guard now that he’s 30 and now perpetually in danger of losing the quick first step that fuels his game.

Unfortunately for the Pistons, with Jose Calderon signing with the Mavericks, this gives them three point guards under contract: Brandon Knight, Rodney Stuckey and Bynum. With Josh Smith, Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond set to form a jumbo front line, there won’t be a lot of space for a point guard to operate, and this trio probably doesn’t have the skills to offset the issues.

The Pistons need an upgrade at the position – perhaps Knight, entering his third year, finally clicks and provides it – but Bynum’s slightly too-rich contract limits their ability to improve. At least they’re getting someone who always plays hard, and they have to appreciate that.
