Maurice Cheeks ‘frontrunner’ for Pistons job

The Pistons, the team with the longest-held head-coaching vacancy, might finally make their hire. It’s been long assumed they’d narrowed their choices to Nate McMillan and Maurice Cheeks, and it seems Cheeks now has the edge.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports:

Oklahoma City Thunder assistant Mo Cheeks has emerged as the strong frontrunner to become the Detroit Pistons’ head coach, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Discussions on a contract could begin soon, league sources said.

Detroit’s ownership and management reached a consensus on Cheeks as their choice, league sources said.

Cheeks wasn’t a reported candidate for any other vacancy, which probably says something about him. He was fired by the Trail Blazers and 76ers, hasn’t had a winning season in his last six years as a head coach and has a career losing record.

But he might be better than the Pistons last three coaches (Michael Curry, John Kuester and Lawrence Frank) – not that would necessarily make him a good hire.
