This shouldn’t even be a story.
But we’re here discussing it because with Andrew Bynum nothing seems impossible, not even him needing another knee surgery and missing the rest of the season. And that combined with a doctor giving his opinion on a case where he has absolutely no direct knowledge of what is happening has gotten people talking on twitter and around the Web.
And it’s all ridiculous. And stupid. But here we are.
It started with Bynum suffering a setback in recovery from a bone bruise in his knee, something he did while bowling. Then a former teammate of Bynum slams his love of the game. You would think Bynum tweaking his knee while bowling would be the most ridiculous thing in this story, but it’s not.
On Wednesday, the Delaware News Journal interviewed a “internationally respected orthopedic surgeon” who is not named in the article (an anonymous source doctor?). While he admittedly has not been part of Bynum’s team of doctors, the 76ers team of doctors, and has not seen Bynum’s MRIs and entire article was done based on his speculation.
He thought this could be a case of “osteochondritis dessicans lesions” which would require surgery. And cost Bynum the season.
And that story has picked up steam around the Web. It shouldn’t.
This is the worst kind of speculation — a doctor who has not seen the information making a dire prediction based on the limited droplets of information that have come to the public. Then a paper running it with bold headlines and some people taking it as fact.
We deal with rumors here at PBT all the time — trade rumors, injury rumors and so on — but the key is knowing and trusting your source. Do you trust the speculation of a doctor who would not use his name in the article and bases a diagnosis on what he reads in the media?
We’d all blow this off totally… except it’s Bynum’s knees, and nothing is impossible. If he missed the entire season, none of us would be shocked.
But still there is no reason whatsoever to consider this speculation as fact. What you can know as fact is Bynum is in a contract year — he is a free agent next summer — and him missing time could be costing him dollars. He wants back on the court. We also know for a fact the Sixers want Bynum on the court because they traded Andre Iguodala for him and made a huge gamble for their future based around him.
But that and that Bynum is out for a while is all we really know for sure. Everything else is speculation, which apparently is becoming more ridiculous by the day.
