Kyle Lowry is in for Toronto (and will play well, this being a contract year and all). Jose Calderon wants no part of being a backup, so his agent and the Raptors are working to find a trade for him.
Which means the Raptors need a backup point guard… enter John Lucas III.
The former Bull is close to a deal to spend his winter north of the border, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.
Sources told ESPN.com the sides are in advanced discussions to finalize the terms on a multiyear deal to add Lucas to a backcourt rotation that had already been strengthened earlier this month by the Raptors’ acquisition of Kyle Lowry.
One source said Wednesday the Chicago Bulls, who’ve employed Lucas for much of the past two seasons, were resigned to losing the 29-year-old.
Lucas will be missed in Chicago, where he played pretty well after Derrick Rose went down injured. But in today’s economic landscape teams are not going to spend much on a backup one, and if Toronto is willing to pay a little more the deal will get done.
