The Hawks have added another point guard to the mix — they have traded for Devin Harris from Utah, sending Marvin Williams back to the Jazz, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.
This comes on the heels of Atlanta shipping out All-Star Joe Johnson and his anchor of a contract for a bevy of players. Hawks new GM Danny Ferry is cleaning house and clearing out cap space, as this deal saves the Hawks more money. It’s the kind of moves the Hawks needed.
It’s also the kind of thing you might do if you were trying to trade for a disgruntled big man in Orlando who is an Atlanta native. Just something to watch, the Hawks have Al Horford and a lot of assets to move if they were thinking Howard. (And Josh Smith loves Dwight Howard, so maybe he stays and plays.) Or any other big move. Just thinking out loud. Clearly Ferry has the mandate to make bold moves.
Harris was considered a real up and comer for the Mavericks when he had the ball in his hand and it was considered a steal at the time when the Nets got him for Jason Kidd. But Harris never hit his stride with the Nets and was always a poor fit for the structured system of Utah. He has never been bad, more like pedestrian (11.3 points, 5 assists per game last season), we’ll see if he can snap out of that.
Pedestrian is how to describe Williams in Atlanta — the former No. 2 overall pick averaged 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds a game for the Hawks.
Utah adds some athleticism they could use in this deal and Williams is more useful to them than Harris.
